How to choose the right image dimensions

Updated 2026-07-24 by KlasseHand Media Tool

Choose dimensions based on where the image will be viewed, not just the largest available size.

Start with the destination

A profile image, web page upload, printable photo, and classroom assignment all need different dimensions. If the destination displays the image at a small size, uploading the camera original can be unnecessary.

Common choices

Use larger dimensions when the image may be printed or zoomed. Use smaller dimensions for email, web previews, and forms that reject large files.

Use caseTypical directionNote
Email previewReduce dimensions and use JPGKeeps attachments lighter
Transparent graphicKeep PNG or WebPPreserves transparency
Photo from iPhoneConvert HEIC to JPG if neededUseful for forms that reject HEIC

Privacy note

Browser canvas export often removes much of the original metadata. That can help privacy, but do not rely on it as a complete redaction process for sensitive images.
